Head of Communications Blog - July 2009

Salaamu Alaikum all,

On the eve of the FOSIS elections as I was preparing myself to run for the head of communications role, I was exposed to some banter from ex-general secretaries who were stepping down from their roles, seemingly celebrating the occassion yet apparently encouraging me at the same time. By the time I woke up the next morning, horrifying images of being convicted of illegal spamming on facebook, bucketloads of emails to read and deal with, and staying up all night editing documents and reports flashed dangerously across my head like a screeching red siren with a  10 foot WARNING sign.

However, if you have gensec blood throbbing through your veins, then this can only sound exciting! Since stepping onto this rollercoaster Alhamdulilah, the past month has been a very exciting journey. Much of my work has been based on requests and helping other committees within FOSIS to get up and running: dealing with egroup requests, managing committees, creating or removing emails and so on. Observing and assisting with the formation of new committees as the FOSIS structure sheds old, adds new and comes back to life with a tumultous roar is a thrilling experience. Alhamdulilah, many committees are now up and running, and at the stage of receiving training. Others have surpassed that and are beginning to plan for the year ahead. Other than that, much of the internal communication so far has focussed on implementing a project management system, looking at how information will be communicated to team FOSIS and Isoc's, and creating a strong team of designers, regional general secretaries and communication officers to assist with the workload throughout the year.

In addition, I have also begun working on a strategy for the external image of FOSIS and PR, and in particular am very enthused about working with new technology and publicity. The website remains of central importance in this regard, and training for fosis members on how to use it will commence soon insha'Allah. Other than that, if any of you out there feel even the slightest vibes when I talk about PR, new technology, design, editing, and general communication then do get in touch with me! I'm very eager to hear from more people to join the team and assist in this great and exciting work! Looking forward to hearing from you all,

Wasalaamu Alaikum
