Midlands Chair - July-September 2010

Assalamualaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatahu my dear Brothers and Sisters,

I pray you are all in good health and in the best of Imaan.

Hamid, Midlands Chair here.

For many of us, University has just started and we’ve just begun getting used to the lectures and workshops rounds that run throughout the week. For some, our weekly timetables are filled with a few grey patches of text announcing the lecture time, date and location.

But Alhamdulillah! Rejoice! There are also intermittent spaces, always emanating with light* in between these, sometimes troublesome grey boxes. These are known as ‘Frees’ for most of us, or ‘Empty slots’ for the more studious amongst us.

What a blessing free time is!

But of course, only if you spend it wisely… :P

;Whilst some of us may have been getting ready for Uni over the last few weeks, FOSIS Midlands has also been busy for quite some time already, alhamdulillah, diligently working on events and projects planned over the coming term and year inshaAllah.

Alhamdullilah Allah- Glory be to Him, the Most High, has given us the ability to organise a speaker tour in the Midlands with Imam Ziaullah, Abu Muntasir and others.

We are also planning our Charity Week tour with Sh. Navaid Aziz from Canada – The perfect ingredient for the perfect Charity Week inshaAllah. We will, by the Will of Allah, leave no stone unturned in our commitment for making it a success. But at the end of the day, it is your responsibility as Islamic Society members to make this occasion a success. We have to go all out in making the most money we can for those Orphans and Needy from around the world.

To end, we have many events planned over the coming few months, make sure you make the most of them. Remember me, you and all of us, will be questioned about this on the Day of Judgement:

The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wassalam said, "On the Day of Resurrection the feet of the son of Adam [man] will not move away till he is questioned about four matters: how he spent his lifetime, how he spent his youth; from where he acquired his wealth and how he spent it, and what he did with his knowledge."

P.S – For those of you on ISoc committees, make sure you sign up for ISOC 101 on the 17th October at DMU inshaAllah!

Wassalam

Midlands Chair- March & Apil

Asalaamualyakum,

Alhamdulillah, the academic year is coming to an end now, with final coursework deadlines, and exams barely weeks away.

The month of March saw the midlands AGM, where the ISocs in midlands where invited by grill the midlands committee and the activities which took place throughout the year. With a serving of brayanni, also came the election of the new midlands committee for the next academic year. The results are in, and the core committee, will be as follows:

Midlands Chair: Hamid Ghazi (Aston Uni Isoc President)

Midlands Vice Sr: Sr Mirina Paananen (Cambridge Uni Isoc President)

Midlands Vice Br: Zain Malik (DeMonfort University)

Midlands Gen Sec: Sr Tahrema Chowdhury (Nottingham Trent uni)

Alhumdialilah with the support of many other brothers and sisters around as well, inshAllah

April consisted of training up the new committee, so they can increase in their work of the Midlands Committee for the next academic year, and learn from where we fell short. Although they won't be taking over just yet (not until FOSIS Annual conference in June InshAllah). :-)

Finally I would like to ask for the forgiveness of everyone, in case I have done something, or said anything wrong. As well as taking this chance to thank everyone on the midlands committee for the years worth of hard work, may Allah reward them greatly.

Wsalaams,

Shuaib Afzal

Midlands Chair- December 2009

December is a time, when then whole winds down for a couple of weeks during the holiday season. However we at FOSIS and especially FOSIS Midlands didn't do any such thing.

FOSIS Midlands have been busy planning for the up and coming projects, for semester two of this year. Alhumdulilah we managed to look back over our work of the past semester, and re-evaluate what our aims and objectives would be for the semester to come. The first main aim, is -as with any FOSIS regional activity- to maintain and to strengthen the relationships we have with the ISocs in the Midlands region. This means making personal bonds with as many of the ISoc presidents and execs as possible. Alhumdulilah this is already thing we have been doing, but there is always room to continue and push forward.

The second aim of this semester is to really encourage more unity between ISocs. ISocs at the moment generally run very independently, although there are odd occasions when ISocs all come together, at a FOSIS event for example. However these events are so short with aims and objectives of their own which means that getting to know each other and building relationships, doesn't get a chance to develop. This aim ties in well with the regional event which are happening in each of the regions this semester these include the FOSIS National Students Quran Competition which, we will be parting in as FOSIS Midlands, as well as FOSIS in conjunctions with iEra dawah, who will be bring ground breaking dawah training to the Midlands. inshAllah.

Other than that we have we the regular speakers tours taking place throughout Midlands which goes with the final main aim, to offer at least something to each ISoc in the Midlands region, we have Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, and Br Idris Toufiq, and many more, soon to be finalised inshAllah tala. We especially want to concentrate on smaller ISocs, as they generally don't get a chance to have many of the more prominent scholars and speakers to impart their knowledge and wisdom. Also with the addition of the new Islamic societies we have in the Midlands, we as the committee really need to work with them, to help them develops so in years to come, they are no longer the smaller Isocs and they are the Isocs who are leading the way inshAllah. May Allah (swt) give us the ability to act upon what has been said in this blog, and give us the ability to implement and bring it into our lives, ameen.

Midlands Chair- October 2009

Assalamulaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I begin in the name of Allah (swt) the most merciful the beneficent.
During October, FOSIS Midlands in collaboration with likeMedia.tv organized a speaker tour with Shaykh Jamal Ud-Deen Hysaw entitled "Now that's what I call Islam 09". The shaykh spoke at De Montfort University, Nottingham, Cambridge, Birmingham Uni and Birmingham City University ISOCs. The lectures were well received with over 700 attendees in total, alhamdulillah.

Sister Fathima, the Midlands vice sister, also organized a sisters only course on the Fiqh of Menstruation in collaboration with IIDR (Institute of Islamic Development and Research) at the University of Leicester. Lectures were covered by Ustadha Selina Ali and Dr Aisha Janjua. The attendees all gave positive feedback and found the course to be very beneficial mashAllah.

The Midlands committee is continuing to sign up and affiliate as many ISOCs as possible. Under the direction of sister Tahirah, we are working to organise ISOC 101, a training seminar on the do's and don'ts of running an ISOC. We are also finalizing details and locations for our 2nd speaker tour. Watch this space!!

Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I have decided to step down from my role as Midlands chair. Although I will assist theMidlands committee wherever possible, brother Shuaib Afzal has agreed to take on the role of Midlands Chair for as long as necessary. Therefore, I ask you all to make dua that Allah (swt) makes this task easy for him and that He (swt) gives strength to the midlands committee, to FOSIS and to the Muslim Ummah inshAllah. Ameen.

Please remember me in your duas,

Wasalaam

Midlands Chair- September 2009

Assalamulaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I begin in the name of Allah (swt) the most merciful the beneficent.

A belated Eid Mubarak to you all, I pray ramadhan went well for you and and your families and I pray Allah (swt) accepts your good deeds inshAllah.

During september, the midlands committee has been busy preparing and organising events for semester one for the isocs in our region. Our first event, "Now that's what I call Islam" in conjunction with LikeMedia.tv, at 5 different ISOC's in the midlands region. The committee has also been busy organising jumah collections for Muslim Aid. As well as this, the sisters on our committee have been busy organising a sisters only event to be held at DMU ISOC on the fiqh of menstruation, in conjunction with IIDR.

September also saw the delivery of freshers packs to the isocs - may Allah (swt) reward brothers Adel, Rashid, Obada, Aqeel and Shuaib and Sisters Zeinab and Fathima - who all worked tirelessly to ensure the isocs in the midlands had their freshers packs delivered on time. On behalf of the midlands committee, I'd like to ask the isocs to forgive us our shortcomings in this and any feedback is more than appreciated.

The midlands committee is now looking to sign up and affiliate as many ISOCs as possible within the region. We are also looking to organise our second speaker tour of the semester, again inshAllah to be held at 5 different ISOC's within the region. We are also looking forward to hosting ISOC 101 under the direction of sister tahirah, may Allah reward her for taking on this task. The sisters within the committee are also in discussions in regards to hosting a sisters event for the ISOC's in the region.

September has been an extremely busy month, especially with Ramadhan, but I pray that Allah (swt) accepts our work, and forgives us our shortcomings. Please remember the ummah and the FOSIS family in your duas inshAllah.

Wasalaam
