North Chair - July-September 2010

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatu Allah

I pray this finds everyone in the best of health and Eman.
Here we are again at the start of the academic year. Mothers and fathers have said goodbye to their loved ones, and their loved ones have said hello to a new life.
Throughout September and October, universities in the North have opened their doors to students, old and new. At a time when societies from all walks of life attempt to reel in new members, Islamic Societies (ISocs) across the region work extremely hard to serve students of the Muslim faith. FOSIS North (FN) is the regional committee dedicated to helping ISocs do this.
After a slow start during the Summer months, FN has upped its game and delivered in what is a very stressful period for ISocers. In my role of chair, I've been busy trying to contact ISocs of the North, making sure they had the support they need, getting affiliations and co-ordinating fresher packs. It has to be said, it wasn't easy. Alhamdulillah, with the help of my committee, and after many phone calls and negotiating hurdles, all 20 ISocs received their packs in time for freshers fairs.
I attended MMU ISocs's Fresher's Dinner two weeks ago, and masha'Allah, it showed the importance of the work ISocs do. It was also pleasing to see how FOSIS's help with delivering packs paid off.
Next up is ISocc 101, and preparations for this are well and truly running. To make it easier for you, we have two events this year; one in Preston (UCLAN ISOC) on 16th Oct, and the other in Middlesbrough (Teesside ISoc) later in the month. These are two new venues for FOSIS events, and we hope this cements our aim in reaching out to smaller, less established ISOC.
Well, that's it from me for now... inshaAllah next time I'll talk about the success of ISoc 101, and the preparations for that very special time of year... CHARITY WEEK :)
JazakumAllahu khayran,

North Chair- March & April

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu,

ISOC 101

Isoc 101 was held at the University of Leeds on the first weekend of March. It was a full weekend programme of training done by Zahid and Rashid. Saturday had a good turnout however Sundays was smaller. All in all I think that the weekend was a great success. I just hope that next years committee are able to have it a lot earlier in the academic year so that it can have the maximum beneficial impact for isocs.

AGM

Regrettably the AGM which was set to happen in Sheffield had to be postponed on the day. Isocs had been contacted but prior to the AGM and on the actual day itself many were unable to attend due to a variety of different reasons. But on a much brighter note the north committee have finally appreciated that Sheffield is a very beautiful city. Alhamdulillah. The AGM has now bee organised for the 9th May at the University of Leeds. Hope to see you there inshallah. Come and hold us to account and to elect the best possible committee for next year.

Unfortunately I had limited internet and phone access for most of March and therefore I feel that the work of the committee really slowed down and struggled. Inshallah plans have been in place to try and deal with such issues from recurring.

North Chair- January & February 2010

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu,

Its been a very busy time of late for Isocs and FOSIS. We have had dawah training programmes, Palestine Conference, Speakers Tours and Islam Awareness weeks taking place across the north. At this time of year there`s a real buzz and excitement on campuses and alhamdullillah it's a real pleasure to witness that.

Dawah Training

Although we had to change the date for the training programme, the event still went ahead and was very well received by those that attended. Br Hamza Andreas delivered an amazing programme which was interactive and fun. Hopefully what people learnt on the day, they were able to implement in their respective IAWS. I just want to say a big thank you to brother Abdul Mukith from FOSIS and the team at Iera for helping to ensure that the event went ahead.

Speakers tours

Many isocs in the north have had the benefit of having speakers from FOSIS on their campus. Idris Tawfiq spoke to a packed audience at the University of Huddersfield Islamic Society and the talk received from very good feedback from the Isoc and the attendees. At Sheffield Hallam, people were literally sat on the stairs when Dr Reda came to speak. This does not even include the others tours done by Hisham Mahmood, Dr Jamal Badawi and Sh Faraz Rabbani. We also worked in conjunction with LikeMedia to who had two successful talks with Shaykh Abdulbary Yahya at Leeds University Islamic Society and Sheffield Hallam. There are definitely areas for improvement and inshallah in the future we will try and ensure more isocs are covered.

ISOC 101

After many problems with room bookings, ISOC 101 will finally be taking place on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of March at Leeds University. The final preparations for that are being made and inshallah we hope to have a packed weekend that isocs from across the north can benefit from.

Inshallah the date and venue for the Annual General Meeting will be decided shortly. Attend and hold us all to account for what we have done. Also see whether any of the committee positions fit your skill set and run for that position. Whether it's the biggest isoc in the region or the smallest, they can all benefit from FOSIS and its upto you to help us deliver.

The fun never stops!

Your brother in islam.

North Chair- December 2009

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu,

Winter Council was held at the University of Leeds in December and it was a great opportunity for Team FOSIS to meet, share ideas and listen to some very inspirational speakers. Dr Hani El Banna left us all with the best reminder that we in FOSIS are here to serve the people.

Inroads are also being made on one of the biggest problems for the north region, building relations with our isocs in the north east. Having spoken to them over the past few weeks, inshallah we hope to have a regional meeting towards the end of January and also ensure that we allocate adequate resources for that region.

We had a committee meeting over the holidays which was open for the isocs to attend. Alhamdullillah it was fantastic to get input from the isocs into our plans for next semester. Theres some pretty amazing events being planned for next semester. Inshallah there will be the Iera dawah training event in Manchester at the end of January. Isoc 101 will finally be taking place( inshallah). Also there are several speakers tours planned including ones with Dr Reda Bedeir and also Mufti Abdurrahman Ibn Yusuf Mangerra. We also have some fun events planned inshallah including a camp in the easter holidays in conjunction with the University of Sheffield Islamic Circle and also a football tournament.

We also have more people on board the committee and inshallah the work continues at a good rate. Areas for improvement have been identified and inshallah I will be doing my best to ensure that effective solutions are implemented as soon as possible.

Walikumsalam wa wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

North Chair- October 2009

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu,

The only time that I realise that another month has passed is when I get an email reminding me to do this blog! October has been a really hectic week for isocs across the north. From Teeside to Lancaster, from Manchester to Hull Muslim students were out in the last week of October helping to raise vital funds for orphans and needy children around the world. So far the feedback has been quite positive and with more Isocs that have taken part, the competition for the coveted top spot has really intensified. Buckets, T-shirts and other resources were provided for all the Isocs and now the plans are being made for the Charity Week Round Dinner which is on the 19th of November at Nawaabs in Manchester.

The first big FOSIS North event is drawing closer, entitled Lessons from the life of Musa As, it is a one day intensive course delivered by two very prolific speakers, Maulana Rafiq Sufi and Dr Omer El Hamdoon. The north committee is busy advertising the event which is on Saturday 7th of Nov at the University of Manchester. It promises to be a packed and eventful day. Preparations are also being made for Isoc 101 which will be held on the 21st and 22nd of Nov in Manchester and Winter Council will also be held in Leeds this year. If you want to get involved in the north events or the north committee, please email me at north.chair@fosis.org.uk.
