Scotland Chair - July-September 2010

Assalamu Alakukum,

So what have me and the Scotland Committee done this summer up until now? We’ve had the usual scurry of worker ant behaviour trying to deliver Freshers Packs at the last minute, putting together the committee, getting affiliations signed off and preparing for the new year. However, by far the best thing that we have done is have a sit down with all the presidents of the ISocs in Scotland and get a chance to talk to them about the upcoming year.

I heard a man say this week – “Respect knowledge, and refrain from giving opinions.” The statement made me reflect on the position of being Chair for Scotland, and how in a position where I’m supposed to support the ISocs how and why would I refrain from giving an opinion. I looked up "opinion" in the dictionary and what I came across was “a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge” and I think this is what the speaker meant by respect knowledge. To respect knowledge is to know our own limitations and the dangers that may cause.

To respect knowledge is to know our own limitations and the dangers that may cause

An example of something I witnessed recently, was a Muslim guy in a pizza shop who I did not know. One of his friends said, “I need to go buy booze” and the Muslim guy turned to him and said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got some at my place.” All I heard was two sentences, and already I thought I knew everything I needed to know.

I had formed my opinion.

A while later, someone asked that Muslim guy a question about why they hadn’t seen him lately, and he said, “I’ve been fasting for a month.” His friend said, “You’ve never done that before” and the Muslim guy turned and said “yeah, well, I went to Saudi this year, and I’ve always been bad, but since I’ve been there I felt something and I want to try and be good now.”

The opinion had shifted. I realised this guy was in a very different place in his faith than I first assumed. All I got was a small snapshot of his life and with this picture it’s difficult to know if I should say something sooner, or later, or not at all and leave him to naturally continue his journey towards good. Would my personal knowledge have been beneficial or harmful?

This is the position I find myself in with the ISocs, how involved should I become? At the Presidents Meeting the best part was how little input there was from the FOSIS committee - we just listened. At FOSIS, we get frequent contact with ISocs, and we’re trying to piece together these snapshots into some sort of film, trying to put ourselves in the shoes of someone in that particular individual ISoc, living in that environment and facing those challenges. We can only begin leading and serving by listening to the ISocs. We can lead by becoming what FOSIS is really about, the grassroots – the individual cities, the individual ISocs and the individual students.

I pray that we continue to lead by serving the ISocs and we have an even stronger year than last year. And I pray for the brother in the pizza shop, and I hope like him we can all aspire ‘to be good now.’

AsalamuAlaikum Warahmatullah

I hope this finds you in a state of good health and even greater iman.

Alhumdulillah the last two months have been really busy for FOSIS Scotland! We had a number of speaker tours including Idris Tawfiq visiting Glasgow and Edinburgh, Sheikh Ahsan Hanif speaking at Caledonian University and in Edinburgh about relationships in the week running up to valentines day, Jamal Badawi visint Aberdeen; as well as Sheikh Amer Jamil and Sheikh Ridwan from Glasgow speaking at a number of Isocs across the country. Stephen Sizes spoke at Napier Isoc and in Glasgow as part of Palestine Week, so Alhumdulillah a very busy time!

Also in February, after a few delays, we hosted iERA and Abdur Raheem Green at a Dawah Workshop day in Glasgow University, Alhumdullillah most Isocs in the region were in attendance, feedback was very positive, and all present said they had benefitted greatly from the day.

We are now building towards our final major event of the year, an Isoc Awards dinner coupled with the FOSIS Scotland AGM. Inshallah it promises to be an event to remember, most of the awards are comical, some serious ones to recognise those people who have made our Isocs tick! The new committee for 2010/11 will also be elected and recruitment has begun to bring in the fresh faces who will take FOSIS Scotland on to greater things in the year to come, inshAllah.

Asalamu Alaikum

Hope you are well and in good faith.

Alhumdullilah it has been a very busy month for Isocs in Scotland with Charity Week dominating the headlines! Many events took place up and down the country and we all eagerly anticipate hearing the total amount raised. May Allah accept the efforts of all those who took part and reward them abundantly.

At the beginning of October we also began the Isoc101 training seminars with the first one taking place in Dundee. Alhumdullilah most Scottish Isocs were represented and all those who took part on the day benefited from the training. The seminars now roll onto the other regions and inshallah will provide many Isocs across the country with training on productivity, effective management, personal development and many other aspects of Isoc work.

Inshallah next month we are hoping to have a speaker tour as well as beginning to visit each of the Isocs, determining their needs and wants so we can learn how best to serve them. Work is continuing for several other projects in the pipeline such as sports tournaments, socials and the away weekend so plenty to look forward to!

Scotland Chair- September 2009

Asalamu Alaikum

I hope you are all well and a belated Eid Mubarak to everyone

September was a busy month for everyone with Ramadhan in full swing but the work still carried on. Fresher packs were distributed to the Isocs across Scotland, though there were some shortcomings which we will look to improve next year. Following Eid we had our first meeting since before Ramadhan to kick our projects for the first term into action! This includes socials, sports tournament, training seminars and inshAllah a few more projects which are in the pipeline.

The next event is the Isoc101 Training Day in Dundee this Saturday, aiming to help Isoc committees improve their professionalism and take their work onto the next level through seminars covering areas about events, finance, teamwork and some of the more individual benefits of Isoc work. Personally I am coordinating the project nationally so it has been a busy time!

Many of the Isocs have also been working on Charity Week which is just around the corner! Inshallah may Allah grant the project the success it has enjoyed over the last few years again and may He purify the intentions of those working in not only this but all Isoc projects and reward the brothers and sisters for their efforts.

AsalamuAlaikum

Hope you are all well and making the most of Ramadhan inshAllah.

The month started with the first meeting of the new Scotland committee and training taking place in Glasgow. We were grateful to have br Rashid and sr Abida with us and with their help we constructed a very full looking year plan Alhumdulillah. From there we all worked on project proposals which were completed on time.

Our first event of the year was a meeting with the presidents of all the Isocs in Scotland which took place in Edinburgh. Alhumdulillah most were able to attend and those who did received a wee gift from FOSIS! It was an excellent opportunity for them all to meet one another and for us to meet them. The meeting was very well received by all the presidents who expressed a wish to repeat it again in the future.

Fresher packs have been ordered for all the Isocs and inshAllah we are hopeful that despite Scottish unis going back earlier we will have the packs in time! Preparation will also shortly begin for our next events, the Isoc Tours to take place over the next few months and Isoc101 Training which will take place in October inshAllah.

Lastly I encourage you all to make the most of what is remained of this blessed month of Ramadhan, particularly of the last ten days. Stay up late and search for that night that is better than a 1000 months and inshAllah Allah will reward you for your efforts.
