"The School of Basic Islamic Studies (SOBIS) was set up in 1995 by Dr. Sufia Lal. Originally intended as a way to provide informal Islamic education for Dr. Lal's daughters and their friends, it now has over 200 students (and dozens of alumni) who follow a formal and comprehensive curriculum which covers subjects ranging from Iman and Salah, to Seerah, Tafsir, Hadith, Arabic, and Stories of the Prophets. The school runs every Friday evening in Cardiff, from 6-9pm and is expanding: this summer SOBIS launched the 'Building Project', and has been fundraising to insha Allah create a multi-purpose youth and community centre.

SOBIS constantly tries to create teaching experiences which are interactive and fun; every year they host an annual function, where kids sing nasheeds, and act in some zany (and some very serious!) sketches and plays to show off what they've learnt throughout the year.

The idea to run a Hajj workshop came about a few years ago, and the first Hajj workshop was trialed in SOBIS in 2007: despite the small scale, it was a massive success. This year, with the launch of the 'Building project', SOBIS decided to extend its services to the community (while also doing a little fundraising!), by creating a large scale and professional Hajj Workshop.

It was completely a team effort: in the weeks leading up to the workshop, students did their best to publicise the workshop; senior students, teachers, and SOBIS graduates chipped in together to create the props - which included 3 mountains, 3 pillars, 2 Camps and 1 Ka'aba! Dr. Sufia Lal produced her own booklets and worksheets for participants to use, and SOBIS volunteers delivered informative lectures and guided over 100 attendees through the workshop.

Alhamdulillah the workshop was a massive success - moreover, the creation of the workshop was important in fostering a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among the students of SOBIS, imparting knowledge in a way that was fun, and building links with the community. As with every idea that comes from SOBIS, it showed how even a small idea can become a great success with sincere intention, hard work, patience, and a LOT of trust in Allah."
