FOSIS Responds to Anti-Semitism Enquiry

Monday, 02 April 2007 14:36

The Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS) in the UK and Eire, has welcomed measures taken by the government to address the rise of anti-semitic attacks within the United Kingdom.

Faisal Hanjra, spokesman for FOSIS, said today, “The increase in anti-semitic attacks is certainly a concern for us all and we all must stand united in condemning it and fighting it. Travelling around the country we have found positive inter-faith initiatives undertaken by many different Islamic societies seeking to build bridges between communities of different religious backgrounds. These initiatives ensure that channels of communication remain open and ensure a greater level of understanding and tolerance between different religious groups.”

He further added, “It is important to note though that while condemning anti-semitism in the strongest possible sense we do not fall into the trap of censoring legitimate criticism of Israel and its oppressive policies. A motion passed at the recent NUS conference implies implicitly that criticism of Israel might well be seen to be anti-semitic. We must never shy away from speaking out against oppression and injustice.” He concluded by saying, “We look forward to working with the government and other relevant organisations in dealing with ‘Islamic’ anti-semitism as and when evidence is put forward suggesting such activity.”
