The Federation of Student Islamic Societies in the UK and Ireland (FOSIS) is pleased to announce the culmination of an eventful year for Muslim Students at last week’s FOSIS Annual Conference ’07: Inspire, at the University of Nottingham.

The conference drew Muslim students and leaders of Islamic Societies from all corners of the UK and Ireland in what proved to be a truly motivating and uplifting spiritual, educational and social experience. With a diverse line up of speakers from around the globe, the conference addressed a variety of issues ranging from basic tenets of Islamic faith, to the attitude of Muslims towards contemporary local and global issues.

FOSIS thanks all the guests who attended the conference, Nottingham University and their Islamic Society for doing a great job of hosting it, and all the sponsors and supporters for contributing towards making it the astounding success it was.

The conference also hosted the Annual General Meeting in which the FOSIS National Executive Committee 2007/08 was elected. The new officers are:

· President: Ali Alhadithi, Leeds University

· Vice President: Zahid Bhatti, Liverpool University

· General Secretary: Sabeen Akhund, Nottingham University Alumni

· Head of Islamic Societies Committee (ISC): Abida Malik, Nottingham University

· Head of Student Affairs Committee (SAC): Rayan Aldouri, University College London (UoL)

· Treasurer: Ferhan Ashiq, School of Oriental and African Studies (UoL)

· Ex-Officio: Wakkas Khan, Manchester University Alumni

Following the close of conference and announcement of election results, President, Ali Alhadithi, made this statement: “I take this opportunity to send a message of congratulations to all Islamic Societies around the country for the exemplary work they’ve been doing. One stands in awe before the shear dedication and enthusiasm Muslim Students have demonstrated towards not only catering for the specific welfare requirements of their own, but also towards enriching the multi-cultural student life experience and promoting greater cohesion between students of all faiths and backgrounds.

“I also express my sincere tribute to all the outgoing officers in FOSIS who’ve striven hard over the years to build the firm foundations the organisation now stands upon. I trust that the new line up of officers will be more than capable of building upon these foundations and continuing to support and develop the work of Islamic Societies in the UK and Ireland.

“Our main aims this year are to build firmer bonds with the Muslim Students at a grass roots level, and to further strengthen the positive working relationships we’ve achieved over the years with various National Organisations (such as the NUS and UUK) and Governmental bodies”.
