General Election 2010

It could be said, brothers and sisters, that we are on the verge of a historic moment for Muslims in this country.

Public fear of Islam and Muslims has crawled its way into mainstream civic discourse. Principles of justice have been broken as spying and unjustified intimidation of Muslims continues to be reported widely. Our foreign policy is weak as illegal wars are excused, and a deafening silence echoes when Israel continues its crimes against morality in Palestine.  And then for students, no solution has been provided by the major parties in the face of rising top-up fees.  Our political system lacks real solutions - the gap between rich and poor continues to widen, a failed economic system has left ordinary people at loss, and the growth of the far-right with groups like the BNP is all to clear to see.

Indeed the list goes on. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us the power of du‘a, he taught us the need to rely on Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) alongside this did not ask us to sit back and watch. He stated, peace be upon him, "Whoever amongst you sees anything objectionable, let him change it with his hand, if he is not able, then with his tongue, and if he is not even able to do so, then with his heart, and the latter is the weakest form of faith."

Combined with reliance on Allah, and du‘a, we must act.

FOSIS is calling upon Muslim students, led by Islamic Societies, to make a change.

That change can be delivered, with the permission of Allah, this Spring through the
GENERAL ELECTION.

We want you to be a part of making that change happen.  Email here if you’re interested.  Anybody can participate.

And please propagate this message far and wide to your mailing lists, friends and colleagues!

The general election presents an awesome opportunity to help shape the future of this country. And it only comes every half a decade. You now decide who the politicans will be and shape what they should stand for.  The politics of those who spread fear and difficulty must be overcome, the politics of those who share our common concerns must be promoted, and policies must now be shaped around what we - the electorate - demand.  Politics must change.

Muslim students have a massive role to play in helping shape that better future for Muslims and for Britain.  The General Election is but a likely eight weeks away.  There is no time to waste.  We need a team of dedicated volunteers around the country who can become a part of this exciting and important campaign.

  • Check out www.getoutandvote.info - working with civic leaders, scholars, activists, within Muslim communities.
  • There are two levels to our strategy - engaging students, and engaging wider Muslim communities.
  • Expect everything from the dedicated website in giving the full low-down on candidates, local media opportunities, to campaigning with mosques, holding hustings events with local MPs, working with local youth organisations and out on the streets campaigning.
  • The campaign will provide you the resources, the knowledge, dedicated training, all the help you need!
  • Official Training Day is on Sunday the 21st of March insha’Allah!  Can you make it??  We can help you get there insha'Allah..
  • This campaign must be led by the grassroots - not experienced and boring politicians - but the people that matter on the ground.

We urge you to get involved, firstly for the sake of Allah to gain His pleasure, and through that to benefit justice for Muslims and for Britain. We aren’t saying that we can change the world tomorrow, but at the very least we can have a significant impact in a number of local seats as per our calculations.

Contact Sister Sara or Brother Nabil asap on studentaffairs@fosis.org.uk if you want more info or if you want to join (please provide your name, University/ISOC, and a brief introduction to yourself) or alternatively call 07912359683.

Such an opportunity only strikes every half a decade.  We're ready more than ever to make a difference.  Be a part of that change!

And we trust in Allah, and with Him alone lies our success.

We hope to hear from you soon.  Jazakumallahu khayran.

Your brothers and sisters in FOSIS.
